Yup, like WT I always assumed it was a commonly known term. I can't remember when I first heard it, but I was in the Midwest and remember the phrase from the time I was just getting into the Dead. Shakedown Street came out the same month as my first shows (!), and was not greeted well by the hardcore Deadheads I knew (which was my only real context in regards to the band, since I don't think I'd even heard of them until that year.)

I really did worry that I was catching the very tail end of an era, and that Disco Dead meant The End of It All.

It's one thing to hear tunes like Shakedown Street now, knowing that it really evolved into a funky jam; it's another thing to hear it with the ears of the time and without hindsight. Disco was widely hated and feared in general; it was the time of "Disco Sucks" and the fear that rock itself would be crushed by slick, commercial techno-pseudo-music. If you were into the Dead, you were seen as a holdout anyway (and felt like it) -- holding the last torch, in a way -- so the writing on the wall did look worrisome. If the Dead went under, would there be anything worth listening to?!?

Well expressed, Rosey; yes, it was very much the fear of where we were heading, and I very much realize that folks here, looking back, can see it diff if they heard yrs of diff sounding versions, etc.

But it was 78, we were scared, we were worried, and the DEAD were sounding odd.
